Gran Canaria has a reputation heavily skewed toward mass tourism, but I wanted to document what remains of the island’s authentic architecture and rugged north coast. My coverage bypasses the predictable southern developments to focus on vertical volcanic cliffs, isolated fishing ports, and the dense, layered history of the interior towns.

Locations featured in Gran Canaria
Agaete
Traditional northern town situated in a steep valley, marked by historic white rooftops and narrow cobbled streets.
Faro de Punta Sardina
An isolated lighthouse positioned on a barren, rocky stretch of the island's northwest coastline.
Puerto de las Nieves
A rugged coastal fishing port where steep volcanic ridges drop directly into the Atlantic.
Arucas
Northern interior town dominated by the dark, imposing gothic architecture of the Iglesia de San Juan Bautista.
Teror
A historic inland municipality featuring dense, traditional architecture and the prominent Basilica de Nuestra Señora del Pino.
Agüimes
An ancient settlement built with colourful stone facades, narrow alleys, and a central parish church.
Tejeda
A remote mountain village situated deep within a vast, dramatic volcanic basin.
La Aldea
A remote western beach characterized by dark volcanic sand and framed by steep mountain passes.
El Bufadero
A section of the coast defined by harsh, porous volcanic rock where the Atlantic waves constantly roll over.
Sardina Fishing Port
A small, functional harbour cut into the barren northern cliffs.
Ingenio
A historic hillside town lined with vibrant, tightly packed houses and narrow pathways.
Bypassing the south for the northern coast
The practical reality of filming Gran Canaria is that the southern half is heavily developed. I focused my aerial work up north, tracking the barren coastline around Faro de Punta Sardina and running high-altitude drone flights over the Agaete valley. The geography here is severe. There are no gentle slopes, just steep drops into the Atlantic Ocean. I flew close passes around the Sardina Fishing Port and pushed up the ridge towards Puerto de las Nieves, capturing the sheer verticality of Playa del Risco.
Documenting the dense interior architecture
Inland Gran Canaria offers bizarre contrasts to the coast. I spent time on the ground walking through the historic centres, tracking the impressive facade of the Iglesia de San Juan Bautista in Arucas and the traditional white rooftops of Agaete. The coverage leans heavily into the tight, cobblestone streets of Teror, Agüimes, and Ingenio. These aren’t manicured sets; they are functional, layered towns. I captured the narrow alleys leading up to Parroquia San Sebastian and the quiet, colourful building frontages that define the island’s older settlements.
Navigating the volcanic elevation
To get a sense of the island’s aggressive topography, you have to climb. My ground footage includes pans across the dramatic mountain valleys surrounding Tejeda and the panoramic views from Mirador de la Vuelta de los Pájaros. I shot timelapses of the shifting light across these upper ridges, contrasting with the crashing waves down at the volcanic rock formations of El Bufadero. Whether walking the rugged coastline at La Aldea or tracking out to the glass balcony viewpoints, the environment here is relentlessly imposing.
